Crunching the Numbers

Good Afternoon Gentlemen,

The first quarter is long gone and May is settling in. I hope this blog finds you all in good health and you’re prepping for all that awaits us this year.

Now then, lets talk.

So you want a new suit. No problem, if you’re one of the individuals that fits what the store stocks. You see today, mens sizes are not what they use to be. A typical size selection will be regulars and longs like this:

  • Reg – 38, 40, 42, 44, 46, 48, 50
  • Longs – 40, 42, 44, 46, 48, 50

When I was a buyer, the selection would look like this:

  • 5’5 to 5’7 – Short 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 46
  • 5’8 to 5’11 – Regular 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 48
  • 6′ to 6’2 – Long 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 46, 48, 50, 52
  • 6’3 to 6’6 – X-Long 40, 42, 43, 44, 46, 48, 50, 52

What this means is that if you are 5’8 to 5’11 and weigh between 165 and 171 pounds, you wear a 40 regular and you will find a good selection of suits that fit. However, if you are 5’8 to 5’11 and weigh between 140 and 150 pounds you are out of luck. The same problem exists if you are over 6’2 in height and weigh 180 to 189 pounds. You are a 40 x-long. Again, out of luck.

The point is, men’s stores have cut size runs to the point that 20% of men cannot be fit off the rack. A custom tailor is the solution for the correct fit, call us and don’t worry, there’s not a test.
